Research & Specialisation

Marcus brings deep expertise across multiple dimensions of game level design and environmental storytelling. His work spans technical implementation and artistic vision, grounded in 14 years of practical experience.

Environmental Storytelling

How physical space communicates narrative through architectural detail, object placement, and visual composition. The goal is spaces that feel inhabited and purposeful, where every element serves both function and story.

Spatial Layout & Flow

Design methodology for guiding players naturally through levels. Understanding how geometry, verticality, and sightlines create intuitive navigation without relying on UI elements or explicit instruction.

Vertical Space Design

Creating complexity and engagement through the third dimension. How elevation, sight lines, and vertical progression create memorable spaces that feel larger and more intricate than they actually are.

Pacing & Level Flow

The hidden architecture that makes levels feel satisfying. How spacing, difficulty curves, and moment-to-moment gameplay create rhythm that keeps players engaged without exhausting them.

Architecture & World-Building

Using real-world architectural principles to inform game spaces. Drawing from Canberra’s landscape and urban design to create believable environments that feel grounded in place and culture.

Design Education & Mentorship

Teaching game level design principles to emerging designers. Translating 14 years of practical experience into frameworks and methodologies that help others understand the craft beyond theory.

Published Work & Achievements

Remnant — Environmental Design Lead

2021–2023

Led environmental design for critically-acclaimed indie title that earned nominations for best art direction. Developed spatial narrative methodology that informed level design across all five major environments. The project demonstrated how architectural language could communicate story and emotion without exposition, establishing Marcus’s reputation in narrative-driven level design.

Spatial Storytelling Methodology Development

2019–Present

Created a comprehensive framework for teaching how game environments function as narrative devices. This methodology bridges technical level construction with artistic principles, making it accessible to designers at all skill levels. Currently taught through Level Craft Studio’s training programs and used by indie studios across Australia.

Design Philosophy

Spaces are characters. They have personality, history, and purpose. When you design a level thoughtfully—when every architectural detail, colour choice, and object placement serves both function and narrative—players feel it. They don’t need dialogue or exposition. The environment tells the story.

— Marcus Holloway

Every detail matters

There’s no such thing as a throwaway element. Colour, texture, architecture, and object placement all communicate to the player. The craft is in making these decisions intentional.

Spaces should feel inhabited

Game levels aren’t just geometry and gameplay challenges. They’re places where people lived, worked, or travelled. That sense of inhabitation makes spaces memorable and emotionally resonant.

Guide without hand-holding

Players don’t want to be told where to go. Through clever use of sightlines, verticality, and spatial logic, you can guide them naturally. They feel smart when they figure out the path themselves.

Balance is everything

Level design sits between technical constraints and artistic vision. The best work happens when both are respected. You need the technical knowledge to know what’s possible, and the artistic sense to know what’s right.
